Drawing Lab

This exercise was to get us familiar with the shape and lines of our object.

This exercise was to get us familiar with the shape and lines of our object. This one was my favorite because it is the cutest even though my eyes were closed.

Day 6 - Synthesis - reflection on techniques and materials up to this point applied to creating final still life of choice with technique and materials of choice. This is the final drawing for drawing lab. I added lighting and value to show that it is a corridor with lighting. But the cat pulls focus into the center of the page, the walls get smaller as you go down the hall. It also looks like the cat has wings and a halo because I love cats.

Project 1

My partner and I are illustrating life and death. For death, I did a word association, googled images for reference (see link below), and sketched out 10 different compositions. We chose to draw in graphite and use rice paper to make our drawings seem unified by that element. We also decided to show the same perspective for life and death.

I chose to use rice paper as my substrate because when I tore it from the roll it reminded me of an EKG strip which records hearbeat.... life and death. I chose to use graphite on the paper because it is so thin and I wanted the lines to not stand out so much.

Project 4

This idea I finally paired down to the dog vs the kid, for the postcard. How much time does it take to take care of a puppy vs a human child. I later changed it to how much money it costs to raise a child and a puppy.

I set up a data sheet to kind of work out what data I would record for this idea. This one is for the puppy Toby.

Fin!

Think back to the first day of class and consider the description of this class that was discussed. Has the course met your expectations? Why or why not? If you can’t remember the description, go back and look over your syllabus before you respond.
Going back to the first of the school year, I thought that the syllabus was a little vague or I just didn't understand it yet. I used to teach drawing so I had a bit of understanding of the elements and principles of art, especially in drawing. The course has met my expectations in reviewing drawing basics and providing me with a challenge. I normally would not have drawn the things that I have drawn.
How has this course challenged you this semester? Said another way, how has this course helped you to grow and learn? Please be specific. Are there materials or techniques that have been a challenge? Why? Have you been challenged to think in different ways than you have before? Did you find any projects to assignments not challenging enough? If so, please describe that experience.
The course has helped me grow and learn by making me think outside of my own box. As an experienced artist, I have found my style and preferred mediums. It was challenging to work with limited supplies and I am happy with my work. I think that there should be more assignments if I were to add something to this class.
Make a list of all of the new technical skills you have learned or refined up to this point.
Principles of Art: Balance, emphasis, movement, proportion, rhythm, unity, and variety
Elements of Art: color, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value.
Were the course materials (syllabus, lectures, notes, assignments, rubrics) clear and easy to access? If not, what changes would help improve your experience?
I would move the lessons for elements and principles to live classroom lessons and have maybe 1 more drawing. I would also put everything online well in advance for those who want to work ahead :-)
How would you rate/describe your participation and engagement in this course throughout the semester? What did you do well? What could you do better/differently as we head into the spring semester?
I participated more in the beginning of the course when all of the learning and guiding happens. After I got the hang of the class, I did not participate as much. I mainly went for guidance and support on my project at the end. I think that I did well on all of my assignments. I put in all of my efforts and came out with good drawings. In the spring semester, I will do the assignments but push myself to go more in-depth into the subject.

Project 3

Juxtaposition is placing two or more objects side by side with the intention of comparing or contrasting the elements. Our first assignment was to brainstorm 10 juxtapositions. I came up with 11 as you can see from the photo.

Here I took my top three ideas (Invisible diseases (inside and out), old and young, and domesticated and wild cats. I sketched out three quick compositions for each idea.
