Practicum Fall 2022
Lisa M. Davis

Handbound Journal for Class
We made hand-bound journals in class. It is where I put all of my classwork from my Practicum. It is a work in progress. I like the red designs that were part of the cardboard used for the covers so I didn't gesso over them like I did the empty space in the middle and on the top. I used sticker and watercolor mediums to add some color and interest.

Linsin Textbook Assignments
The textbook was short so I was able to add all of my typed assignments for this book into a two page spread. I glued my typed answers, used and activated watercolor crayons to create borders, included a picture of the book in case I want to reference it later, a book review with a picture of my opinion of the book (thumbs down), and included what I learned from the book..... I need to work on classroom management plan.

Szekely Textbook Assignments
This textbook and assignments were long so I decided to type my answers, fold them, and number them with the assignment numbers. I included a book review (thumbs up), a picture of the cover of the book in case I want to reference it at a later date. Last, I added to the page in handwritten text is what I learned from this textbook and some little doodles and washi tape.

Art Walk Conway Sept 2, 2022
On September 1, 2022, I went to the Conway Art Walk for the first time in years. The gallery at UCA Downtown was full of artwork and people. I also went to the Maker Space and got to see a few artists in their studios. I talked with a couple about their art but it was too crowded to really have a conversation about art.

Warm-up Sept. 6, 2022
Making Movement from Art "Let's Dance"
Reflections: The only thing I departed from my plan was that I didn't use the slides I prepared because I couldn't find them in my google drive. Students learned the objective of learning how movement shows up in a painting or a drawing. I used observation to know that they learned the lesson. I want them to be able to do this with other paintings. If I were to teach this again, I would maybe talk a little bit more about each drawing and painting. I think it went well. I should have shared more about the paintings and I wish I would have used music but overall great for a warm-up.

Conway League of Artists
Sept 13, 2022
Presenter- Muralist Katie Wilson from the Museum of Fine Arts in Little Rock Arkansas
Purpose of Event: Every second Tuesday, the Conway League of Artists meet at the Faulkner County Library to share artworks, discuss opportunities in and around central Arkansas, and have artists come and speak to share their art and process. Most of the time there are hands-on projects for attendees. Katie Wilson is a muralist by chance in Little Rock, Arkansas who found an opportunity to create large, outdoor and indoor murals in public spaces. She uses exterior latex paints, a projector and a grid system. Ms. Wilson had us learn and practice the grid system. Each participant was given one square with a design on it and a piece of blank paper to repeat the pattern that we see on the square. After everyone had finished their own square, we put them all together like a puzzle and created the mural.
Reflection: From this meeting/presentation, I learned how to create outdoor murals. I didn’t know what type of paint muralists used or how they transferred the image from small to large scale. I already knew the grid system but had never used it while changing scale. I also learned to jump at opportunities when they come even f I have never experienced that type of artwork or application. Ms. Wilson had never created a large outdoor mural when she saw the call for artists for the mural project but applied anyway and her design won. I need to not be afraid to put myself out there and try new things. I find that this knowledge will help me in the future by allowing me to create murals with my future students.

Day 1, 2022 Greenbrier, AR
We began the day in the STEAM classroom where Mrs. Moore runs the STEAM club. We had students make paper airplanes of their own design. They then tested them and recorded notes based on observations. We then watched a video on how to make the best paper airplane. Last, students followed the directions to make the new airplane, tested the new design, recorded observations and measurements, and compared them to their previous design.
We then went to her classroom for art. We had 5th grade through 2nd grade before lunch and 1st and kindergarten after lunch. She had previously taught and reviewed line, the color wheel, primary and secondary colors, and how to watercolor. The students were given a very quick reminder of what they were working on since they only have art once per week. Students worked at their own pace in order to complete the paintings. They will be allowed to complete them next Friday.

Mrs. Moore and I dressed up as a character from our respective books. I chose to be the Witch from "Room on the Broom" and Mrs. Moore was the Wolf from the book "The Wolf's Story.

Here are some classroom decor Ideas for an assignment. I started a Pinterest Board for my dream art classroom.

The purpose of the conference was to provide professional development to Arkansas teachers in the area of art education. I attended the free sessions and found that some were interesting and I learned something from the presenter, but some were very dull lectures. All of the presenters offered their slides with links and information if we provided an email so I’ll have to wait for those to provide more detailed information. But, hopefully, this will be enough to give you an overall view of my experience. I will talk about a couple of the most valuable presentations from the conference.
The session which I thought could be the most useful in my future Upper Elementary or Middle School classroom was entitled “Falling in Space”, with Sarah Jones. She talked about her 6-week unit, assuming that you see the class once a week or a 2 to 3-week unit if you have them more often. Her unit covered perspective, proportion, overlapping, form, shape, and more. She opened with vocabulary and went to the foreground, middle ground, and background. Then she discussed sizing and overlapping. She had a couple of links to short videos on these subjects for the kids to watch. Part 1 was foreground where they trace their hands and feet on paper and cut them out to glue down on their drawing paper. Next, part 2 was the middle ground in which the student drew the body going up into space. For example, the head would be small, the arms a little bigger, the legs wider, etc. Basically, she was teaching perspective. Part 3 was background and details. Students drew space objects such as suns, stars, galaxy patterns, etc. onto their backgrounds and watercolored the negative space.
The second session that I found to be most valuable for my future Elementary or Middle School classroom was called “Art Inspired Art” with Suzi Davis. She shared numerous projects that she uses in her classroom. These projects were inspired by artists such as Klimt, VanGogh, and some that were not known to me. When she sends me a copy of the slides, I will share them with the class. The first project that she shared was “Abstract Self-Portraits” inspired by Sandra Silberzweig. She used school glue to create portraits on paper. Then she used chalk pastels for the kids to create their portraits. She also suggested using oil pastels and watercolor. After their portraits are complete, she gives them a self-assessment for the project. She did have a copy of this and I will get it to you soon. I think it was a valuable assessment tool that could be adapted to many other projects. Another project she discussed that caught my attention was “City Nights” inspired by silhouettes in Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”. The students study things from around their home town and create silhouette paintings of those features. They then create the night sky. I don’t remember what mediums she said that she uses but I could see creating the silhouette of the town buildings and objects from black acrylic paint and oil pastels for the sky or you could use watercolor depending on the grade level and skill level of the students. Another project that I thought I could find useful was “My Favorite Chair” inspired by artist Charles Renny Mackintosh. This lesson teaches about Art Nouveau and 3D design. Students study the artist and movement. They then sketch out what their chairs will look like. Then use those designs to create a small 3D chair. This sounds like a good way to use up your stash pile of all the bits and bobs that artists collect. The projects were fabulous!
There was one other session that I would like to mention quickly. “Fibers” was by Candace….. I couldn’t hear what her last name was and she did not have a PowerPoint with her. She said that she would email us with that information. Her project didn’t come in time for her to show us her project or have materials for the workshop (she was going to teach us about dying fabrics). Instead she stood up there and gave us some resources on finding funding for buying materials for projects. When she sends me her slides, I will share. She mentioned the President’s Foundation Fund and the application can be found on the Arkansas Art Education website. In conclusion, I did learn quite a few projects that I can see myself using in my future classroom. I especially found the projects discussed valuable.
