Creative Voice Part 1: Reading Comprehension

Post your responses to your digital sketchbook

  1. From the introduction, how does the author define the ‘artistic voice’?

All the specific stories, colors, markers, symbols, lines, and patterns that you infuse into your work.  Personal point of view.

  1. The author states that finding your voice is not just something that magically happens. Instead finding your voice is a process of what?

The process of finding your voice is like uncovering your own superpower.  Your artistic voice is what sets you apart and what makes your work interesting, distinctive, worthy of discourse, and desired by others.

  1. From Chapter 1, what are the five major elements of an artistic voice?

Style, subject matter, consistency, skill, medium

  1. How does the author define “style”?

The look and feel of the work.

  1. The author lists several examples of things that can make up an artist’s style. Are there any elements of style that you currently use? Are there any on this list that are interesting to you that you would like to experiment with or explore further? Explain.

I work loose and messy a lot.  I am in college to explore further.

  1. How does the author define “skill”? What is the most significant method for developing skills?

To do something well.  Means that you have the technical abilities to execute your ideas in whatever medium you choose.

  1. What is “subject matter”? The author does not give a clear definition as in the other categories so if you are not familiar with the term you may need to do some research or refer to your notes from studio A or B.

What subject matter you find inspiring.

  1. In his interview, Sean Qualls states that your voice becomes stronger when you develop your vocabulary. He is not specifically talking about word vocabulary here. What does he mean instead and what examples does he give?

Take in as much as possible.  Vocabulary equals life experience.

  1. How does the author define “media/medium”?

The substances and tools you use to give expression and form to your voice.

  1. How does the author define “consistency”?

Repeat elements within and among your works.  Similar subject matter, same media and elements of style like color, pattern, lines, and markings.

  1. From Chapter 2, your story is not necessarily a re-telling of your life. What are the other possibilities the author lists for telling your story?

Who you are in your life.  Your individual preferences and interests.

  1. Carolyn Sewell is quoted for saying, “Pleasing everyone is the shortcut to beige.” What does she mean by this?

Trying to please too many people.  Do things for yourself.

Reading Response

Foundations Seminar II

Read the short excerpt from Austin Kleon’s Steal Like An Artist and answer the following questions. Be prepared to discuss these questions in class. Please post your responses below to your digital sketchbook.

1. In your own words, explain what Kleon means when he says artists “steal”.   He believes that all art is undetected plagiarism.

2. How do you feel about copying another artist’s work? Have you done it before? If so, describe the experience - what did you learn?

I learned most of what I know about art through online art classes.  In the class, you usually follow and copy the teacher to learn the technique or whatever they are teaching you.  Then, you can go incorporate it into your own art.

3. There are 7 short essays in the reading (How to look at the world like an artist, Nothing is Original, Garbage in/Garbage Out, Climb your own family tree, Make things know thyself, Start Copying, and imitation is not flattery) along with several quotes and drawings. First, tell me what content resonates the most with you at this moment. You can choose to list a few sentences from an essay, specify the title of an entire essay, or post a picture of one of the quotes or drawings. Then, describe in-depth why it feels relevant to you.

Nothing is original resonates with me because it is true.  Someone has thought of that before but it really depends on your style to make it different.
